Friends,

I was at the U.S. Capitol a year ago today — when Donald Trump’s lies and fraudulent claims about the election incited a violent insurrection.

Trump and the insurrectionists’ attack on our democracy shook me — and people across the country and even the world. Multiple people died or took their own lives as a result of that horrific day, including brave Capitol Police officers. Their loved ones and fellow Americans continue to grieve.

But hate did not win that day, and our democracy continued on.

As soon as it was safe, my colleagues and I returned to the Senate floor to certify the undeniable results of the election — Joe Biden was going to be the next President of the United States.

In the year since, we have seen some Republicans downplay the events of that violent day in our nation’s history. We’ve watched as Republican-led legislatures across the country have passed law after law to undermine our democracy and the constitutional right to vote. And we’ve seen Senate Republicans exploit the filibuster to block critical voting rights legislation.

But democracy prevailed last January 6th and it will prevail again. I won’t stop fighting to hold those responsible for this violence accountable, protect and expand voting rights, and make sure a horrific day like this never happens again.

Thank you.

— Martin
