Friend, today marks one year since one of the darkest days in our nation’s history. A day when a violent mob bearing white supremacist symbols struck at the heart of our democracy.
One year later, this day is a reminder of a defining struggle throughout our nation’s history: a struggle between those who stoke fear and hate in order to hold power, and those of us fighting for equality and justice.
That fight for justice is far from over, and the stakes have never been higher as we consider the road ahead in this gubernatorial election. Not only did one of our extremist Republican opponents attend the Trump rally that led to the deadly Capitol riot on January 6th, but he even arranged buses for the insurrectionists.
And when the elected officials at the Capitol were at risk of being overtaken by an armed mob, and lives were being taken, Dan Cox tweeted that Vice President Mike Pence was a “traitor.”
Maryland is at risk of having this dangerous insurrectionist as its leader. We need to do everything we can to defend our democracy and quell destructive QAnon conspiracies, not elect the very people promoting misinformation and threatening our democratic way of life.
On the first anniversary of this horrific event, I invite you all to take a moment to think about the work that lies ahead. I'm still faithful that, together, we can build a brighter future for our nation where everyone has the opportunity to thrive — that's what our movement is all about.
In solidarity,
John King
