January 6 was a deliberate insurrection. Trump's “Big Lie” not only undermines our elections and threatens our democracy, but it also resulted in police officers, sworn to protect our lives, losing their own.
As the year has unfolded, we’ve discovered through the bipartisan investigation in the U.S. House that Trump and his enablers were even more involved in the insurrection than he let the American people believe.
Make no mistake: these violent rioters didn't act at random. This was a deliberate attack, spurred on by Trump himself when the ex-president, in a speech full of baseless claims of election fraud, intentionally inflamed a group of extremist followers moments before the attacks.
Trump's baseless conspiracy theories and flagrant disregard for the American people continue to undermine our democracy and bring the integrity of our election system into question. The violent January 6 riots were a frightening glimpse of how dangerous Trump's Big Lie can be when misinformation runs rampant.
As Secretary of State of New Mexico, that is precisely why I am fighting so hard for your right to vote. I'm proud that our state has been a proven leader in pro-democracy practices. I remain committed to safeguarding our elections and ensuring that every New Mexican has equal access to the ballot box.
