Today marks one year since the Capitol insurrection and I’m reflecting on what happened in our U.S. Capitol when a mob stormed in to try to stop the certification of a free and fair election.

Make no mistake, what happened on January 6, 2021 is a stain on our history. Now, it’s up to us — and the House’s bipartisan investigation — to understand exactly what led to these events, correct the failings in the system that allowed them to escalate, and do whatever we can to prevent such undemocratic events from unfolding again.

Accountability for all those involved is necessary as well as protecting the integrity of our electoral system. I am saddened that so many of my Republican colleagues do not agree with this mission.

Today is a somber anniversary, yes, but it is also one that reminds us that our democracy, while in a fragile state, isn’t broken and that we must work together for it to persevere.
