Sadly, dozens of police officers suffered physical injury, many others left the ranks of the Capitol Police, others chose to take their own lives, and others died or sustained permanent life altering injuries during the attack. The emotional toll on law enforcement and legislators present on that day will no doubt linger for years to come.
January 6, 2021 is a reminder of how fragile democracy is and that freedom comes at a high cost. Let us never forget that Donald J. Trump and others responsible for the safety and welfare of our nation did everything within their power to overturn the will of the American people.
Never forget the sacrifice of those that stood their ground to protect our lawmakers as they conducted the business of the people on that day, and let us remember the role that Donald Trump, GOP leaders, and other people in power took in the insurrection.
Here in Florida, we must also acknowledge that Trumpism is alive and well, as evidenced when Governor Ron DeSantis signed SB 90 into law. SB90 was crafted with the sole purpose of suppressing the vote for elections in November 2022 and must not be allowed to stand.
It is up to us to fight this blatant voter suppression. It is up to us to save our Democracy.
