After spending the entire post-election period lying about the integrity of our elections and attempting to overturn our democracy, Republicans whipped their supporters into a violent frenzy that led to five deaths at the Capitol one year ago today
This isn’t new. Republicans have spent generations lying to their voters about the grave threats of Democratic policies. Ronald Reagan warned that Medicare would lead to “spend[ing] our sunset years telling our children, and our children’s children, what it once was like in America when men were free.”1
The lies that led to the January 6th, 2021 terrorist attack on our Capitol and our democracy are a simple extension of the lies Republicans have told for decades. Until there is accountability, the lies will get bigger and more dangerous, until we all pay the price.
The Constitution has a clear prescription for members of Congress who aid an insurrection: Expulsion.
No Person shall be a Senator or Representative in Congress, or elector of President and Vice-President, or hold any office, civil or military, under the United States, or under any State, who, having previously taken an oath, as a member of Congress, or as an officer of the United States…to support the Constitution of the United States, shall have engaged in insurrection or rebellion against the same, or given aid or comfort to the enemies thereof.
