Folks,
Today is the anniversary of the insurrection at our nation’s Capitol.
I remember the day well. What started as a victorious day for democracy and the American people became a violent nightmare thanks to the former, defeated president and Republicans at every level of government who spread his “Big Lie” about the election being stolen.
On January 6, 2021, I watched colleagues from both sides of the aisle petrified with fear when the violent mob of insurrectionists breached the U.S. Capitol building.
And then I witnessed 147 Republican lawmakers vote against certifying the results of the 2020 election.
They had the chance to set the record straight and chose not to. Even though mere hours earlier they themselves were subject to the violence brought on by Trump and his lies.
A year after the insurrection, we still don’t have answers about what exactly took place that dark day because Republicans are trying to block our progress every step of the way.
And Republicans are still raising money off of and perpetuating the “Big Lie.”
But, your Democratic House majority is working diligently to investigate the events that took place on January 6th to get you the results and accountability you need and deserve.
It is going to take a long time to undo the damage that Donald Trump has done to our democracy, but our democracy can, and will still work. It did when we went back onto the floor in the wee hours of January 7 to certify the results of the 2020 election.
It will this time as well, but only if we preserve it.
