Friend,

One year ago today, insurrectionists stormed the U.S. Capitol building as part of a violent attempt to overturn the 2020 presidential election results.

I vividly remember being in my office as it all unfolded. What started out as an ordinary day to gather with my colleagues to certify the results of the election, quickly turned into one of the darkest days in recent history.

I was told to shelter in place. Never in my life would I have imagined that our nation’s Capitol would be under attack from within. Or that one year later, even more Republican members of Congress would join the former, defeated president in peddling the very same lies that led to the insurrection.

The lives of so many who work in the Capitol were put at risk that day, and I am deeply grateful to the Capitol Police for their heroic acts. However, the damage done to our democracy by the insurrectionists reminds me of why I entered public service.

I remain committed to holding those who are responsible accountable, defending our democracy, and restoring civility to our politics.

Republicans are refusing to cooperate with the House’s January 6th investigation, but we won’t give up until we uncover the full truth and hold those who are responsible accountable.

We can’t undo what happened on January 6th, 2021 – we can only use it as motivation to ensure that nothing like this ever happens again.

Thank you for your support,

Haley
