Team,

One year ago today, we witnessed one of the darkest days in our nation's history — a day I won't ever forget. What started as a normal day at work in the Capitol building ended in destruction and loss of life.

Former President Trump incited a deadly insurrection when he refused to accept the results of a free and fair election. He encouraged an armed mob to storm the People's House, vandalize the Capitol building, and attack police officers. What we saw that day wasn't just an attack on a building – it was an attack on our democracy.

Thankfully, Trump and his allies failed. After several hours, order was restored, and Congress got back to work and certified the election. President Biden was sworn in as the 46th president of the United States, and the will of the American people was carried out.

Our democracy prevailed, but we can't forget the insurrection or the anti-democratic extremism that persists in our nation.

President Trump spent his presidency stoking the flames of hatred and extremism, and his "Big Lie" continues to galvanize extremists across the country to hurt our democracy. State politicians spent 2021 trying to roll back voting rights, with state legislatures passing sweeping voter suppression laws across the country. In fact, last year at least 19 states passed 34 laws restricting access to voting.

Donald Trump is no longer president, but we still have plenty of work ahead to repair our democracy, stop the roll back of voting rights, and ensure nothing like the insurrection ever happens again. That's why I've sponsored and worked to pass H.R. 1 the For the People Act. It's why I've sponsored and worked to pass the Protecting Our Democracy Act. It's why I've sponsored and worked to pass the John Lewis Voting Rights Advancement Act. It's why I supported the creation of the House Select Committee to Investigate the January 6th Attack on the US Capitol. And it's why I'm proud that my bill, the Honest Ads Act, was included in the Protecting Our Democracy Act to combat extremism by stopping bad actors from influencing our democracy through online ads purchased with dark money.

Team, our democracy is worth fighting for, and I know together we can build a more perfect union for all of us.

It's an honor to serve you,

Derek Kilmer
