It has been one year since the shameful insurrection took place in the United States Capitol in a failed attempt to stop our democratic process and the peaceful transition of power. As someone who served in law enforcement for 27 years, today, I am mindful of the brave Capitol and Metropolitan Police Officers who sacrificed their lives to protect not only members of Congress but also our sacred democratic process.

We need to remember that January 6th was not simply a case of criminal trespass or rioting but an attempt by extremists to disenfranchise the will of voters during a fair and free election. There is no other way to put it. We must and can do better. I will always put country and truth first; that’s the American way.
