Friend,

One year ago today, armed insurrectionists stormed the U.S. Capitol in a deadly attempt to undermine the will of the American people and overturn the results of a free and fair election.

What we experienced on Jan. 6, 2021, was an attack on the heart of our democracy, an unabashed exercise in attempted disenfranchisement, a historic abandonment of our democratic framework.

But make no mistake: The attack on our Capitol was not an isolated incident.

What started as a single lie told by the former president – that the 2020 election was stolen – grew into a massive, coordinated campaign in GOP-led states across the country to destroy faith in our democratic institutions and suppress our sacred right to vote. It has metastasized into a national 911 state of emergency.

Right now, Republican politicians are escalating their attacks on voting rights, and I'm counting on you to join me in fighting back. I'm working in the Senate to pass the critical voting rights legislation we desperately need to protect our democracy – but I'm facing massive GOP obstruction, and I need to know that folks like you are with me.

That's why I'm looking for 25,000 concerned Americans to sign my new petition to defend voting rights, and I'm counting on you to be one of them. Please, friend, join me in speaking out: Will you add your name before midnight tonight to defend our voting rights and stand up for our democracy?

On that day of unrest, violence, and anger a year ago, I turned to the words of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.: “Darkness cannot drive out darkness; only light can do that. Hate cannot drive out hate; only love can do that.”

We cannot be discouraged, friend – we must each try to be a light to see our country out of this dark moment. We must each rise up to defend our very democracy so that we might pass on a future that's worthy of all our children.

One year later, I continue to ask my fellow Americans: How can we be the light that guides our country out of the darkness? I hope you'll join me in being that light, friend.

Thank you for speaking out.
