One year ago our nation’s Capitol was attacked by an armed mob.
They were armed with weapons, our American flag, the Trump flag, and lies. I admit, I never thought I would be rushed out of the House Gallery in a gas mask, alongside colleagues and staff – Democrats and Republicans .
One year ago, I believed the attack on the cathedral of our democracy would expose the danger of anti-democratic lies and would teach us the precious fragility of our democracy. I had hoped it would pull us together as a people. I was wrong.
Yet you and I know we cannot afford to be wrong – and we have work to do.
As Justice William Brennan said, “The Constitution will endure if we have the courage to defend it, the vision to interpret it, and the fidelity to live by it.” It is up to all of us to have that courage, vision, and fidelity.
I’m committed to supporting my colleagues on the January 6th Select Committee, so that we will learn the truth and ensure that this doesn’t happen again. We must hold those involved accountable, no matter their name or position .

For me, I am using these days to remember and thank the brave officers who fought and were injured – and even died – to protect us and our democracy; to reflect on the power of lies, yet the even greater power of the truth; and to ask all of us to recommit ourselves to our democracy so that our Constitution will endure for ourselves and for our children.
