Friend,
One year ago today, we witnessed one of the darkest days in the history of our democracy.
My heart goes out to the families of the Capitol Police officers who lost their lives and to the Capitol staff who experienced the attack, doing everything they could to stay safe. On that day, violence and chaos overwhelmed our nation’s Capitol.
Unfortunately, the threats to our democracy are far from over.
We can’t and shouldn’t erase what happened on January 6th, or what’s happened since. In the year since the insurrection, Republican state lawmakers across the country -- especially here in Texas -- have used the Big Lie that “Trump won” and fake threats of election security to push through some of the most aggressive voter suppression legislation in decades. Trump’s Big Lie and the turmoil it caused are both a stain on our history and an ongoing threat to our nation.
We must work to make sure those responsible and those who were complicit in this attack -- including 17 Texas Republican members of Congress -- are held accountable for their actions. Protecting our American democracy should not be a Democratic or Republican issue.
Politicians who put our democracy in jeopardy still walk the halls of Congress, run our state government, and lead our communities.
They know their days are numbered.
In November, it’s up to us to hold Texas Republicans accountable for their actions. We won’t rest until everyone who incited or participated in this attack is held accountable. I hope you feel the same and will join our fight.
Adelante,
Gilberto Hinojosa
