Friend,

As we look ahead to the new year, we’re also looking back on an anniversary we never thought we’d have to remember — an attack on our democracy.

One year ago today, a violent mob terrorized our nation’s Capitol in a desperate attempt to prevent Congress from certifying the results of the 2020 presidential election. But the attack wasn’t just in D.C., one happened right here in our home state.

Pro-trump supporters, some of who were carrying weapons, broke through the gates of the Governor’s mansion. While the country watched our Capitol being overrun, us Washingtonians were experiencing the threat on an unspeakable level.

Looking back, it’s hard to describe what we were feeling, and there still aren’t enough words to describe it one year later.

But we do know this: Last year’s attack was a direct result of former-President Trump stirring division, hate, and distrust towards our democracy. We are still living with the fallout of his actions.

Earlier this week, The Seattle Times reported that three Washington State Republican Legislators used taxpayer money to attend an election conspiracy conference last year in South Dakota.

This is not the leadership we need or deserve, friend. If last year’s attack has taught us anything, it’s the importance of electing strong, local leaders who believe in bettering our democracy — not ones who tear it apart.

Everyone here at the Washington Senate Democrats is committed to protecting American democracy and setting an example of true leadership by standing up to any who would violate and terrorize our nation’s values.

Sincerely,

Adam, Katy, Malorie & the whole team at the Washington Senate Democratic Campaign
