John,
One year ago, at the direction of President Trump, the United States Capitol was attacked by a mob of rioters seeking to prevent Congress from fulfilling our constitutional obligation to certify the results of the presidential election. I was on the House floor as they tried to break down the doors to overturn a free and fair election.
This act of violence was one of the worst attacks on our democracy in American history, and I’ll admit that I am still shaken by what happened at the Capitol that day.
I remain incredibly grateful for the efforts of rank and file Capitol and DC Metro Police officers who risked and gave their lives protecting me, my colleagues and our democracy. The use of violence for political gain is terrorism and we, as Americans, have an obligation to these officers and to future generations to ensure that we never come this close to losing our democracy again.
Since that day, the former President and his allies across the country have continued to spread the lie that the election was stolen and put in place restrictions that make it harder to vote and that discourage folks from participating in our democracy.
These efforts are unAmerican and are a threat to democracy not just here but around the world. It is up to us to show folks that democracy still works. I’ve said since January 6, 2021 that the biggest divide in our politics right now isn’t between Republicans and Democrats but between those who still believe in our democracy and those who don’t.
As we move forward into this new year, it is my sincere hope to work alongside my colleagues from every political background who believe in our democracy to protect it and shore it up so we never again see what happened one year ago repeated.
Thank you and God bless America,
Colin
