Today we solemnly remember the unprecedented attack our nation faced on January 6, 2021 -- and we recommit ourselves to making our democracy strong enough to overcome any and every attack.
The attempted coup of January 6 didn’t happen in a vacuum. One can draw a straight line from gerrymandering and voter suppression based on the GOP’s lies about “election fraud” to insurrection. All of these are ways for many in the Republican Party to chip away at our democracy and to hang on to political power at all costs.
And it didn’t end on January 6, 2021. The rampant attacks on voting, the bald-faced lies, the threats against election officials, the map manipulation -- it’s all ongoing. And it’s our responsibility to fight all of it. So today we’re asking: Will you chip in to help the NDRC defend American democracy?
Over the past decade, Republicans have become more and more extreme, in part because gerrymandering makes them less accountable to voters. Of the 139 U.S. House members who voted against certifying President Biden’s election, many are from states with gerrymandered maps -- including ringleaders like Jim Jordan, Matt Gaetz, and Marjorie Taylor Greene. These are the Republicans who could be in charge if the GOP wins the 2022 midterm elections. It’s very likely that if this happens, the House committee investigating January 6 would cease to exist.
What's really at the crux of all this is that many in the Republican Party appear to no longer believe in democracy -- in voters choosing their leaders, and holding those leaders accountable. Their obstruction of the Freedom to Vote Act and John Lewis Voting Rights Advancement Act makes that clear. That's why we are fighting for the passage of those bills and will continue to fight every attack on fair elections.
