One year ago today, the January 6th riot at the Capitol shook the country — and our democracy — to its core.

Just three days after being sworn into office as New Mexico’s newest Senator, and less than 24 hours after winning a Democratic majority in the Senate, a sitting president spread a lie and attempted to overturn an election, inciting violence that culminated in a direct attack on our nation’s democracy.

Lives were lost as a result of that day, including those of Capitol Police officers, whose bravery kept Members, staff, and journalists safe, something I will always be grateful for.

As painful as it is to look back on that day, it’s imperative we do so. Let it serve as a solemn reminder of what happens when toxic lies and electoral disinformation spread out of control, and let it help us prioritize our work as we move forward together.

We must protect the right to vote, so that the will of the American people is respected. We must continue to live our values by fighting for legislation that benefits us all. We must call out election disinformation, stand for truth and justice, and condemn political violence wherever it occurs.

My Senate colleagues and I have a lot of work to do in the months ahead. My promise to you is that I will work tirelessly until we get it done.

Ben Ray
