Reissued report includes a new preface taking stock of national accountability efforts on the first anniversary of the January 6th insurrection.
In December 2020, Protect Democracy released “Towards Non-Recurrence: Accountability Options for Trump-Era Transgressions.” The paper aimed to bring together scholarship and lessons from domestic and international experiences to help navigate difficult questions about accountability in the wake of the past four years. Only weeks after the release, the former president and allies incited a violent assault of the U.S. Capitol.
On the first anniversary of the January 6th insurrection, Protect Democracy is reissuing the paper with a new preface that assesses both limited success and profound shortcomings in the pursuit of accountability. After a national campaign to subvert an election — culminating in a violent attack on Congress — how are we performing at holding those responsible to account?
The paper argues that given the incomplete approach to accountability to date, “recurrence, and worse, seems likely.”
