The hero: Mitt Romney credited Capitol police officer Eugene Goodman with saving him from a violent mob. Goodman, whose quick thinking diverted those who breached the Capitol from U.S. members of Congress, said he was doing his job. Awarded the Congressional Medal of Honor in February, Goodman symbolized the police officers and officials who—just barely—managed to preserve America’s democracy a year ago today. “History should remember Eugene Goodman, representing all those patriots, as 2021’s Person of the Year,” wrote Washington Post columnist Eugene Robinson in December. (Pictured above, Goodman arriving at the Capitol for the inauguration of President Joe Biden on Jan. 20, 2021.) _________________________________________________
In other news: Lawrence Brooks, who, at 112, was the oldest known living World War II veteran, died on Wednesday, the AP reported. Brooks made the cover of the June 2020 National Geographic issue, telling us that the segregation of the military then still rankled him. “Every time I think about it, I’d get angry, so the best thing I’d do is just leave it go,” he said.
