John, today is a day of solemn remembrance.
One year ago, right-wing insurrectionists stormed our Capitol — the people’s building — stopping at nothing to delegitimize and attack our democracy.
I was in the Capitol on January 6th when Trump supporters attacked police and stormed the building to stop the peaceful transfer of power to the Biden administration.
I’ll never forget that day. Members of Congress, our staff, service workers, and police officers alike — all at the mercy of an angry mob incited by the former president.
Despite the carnage and fatality of January 6th, far-right efforts to invalidate the results of the election did not stop there. Right-wing members of Congress continued to uphold Trump’s Big Lie and Republican leaders across the country conducted sham “audits” in an effort to overturn the election results by any means possible.
One year later, this much remains true: the fight to reclaim democracy has never been more alive. And I’ll continue to do everything in my power to defend our democracy — by protecting access to the ballot box and holding those attacking our democracy accountable.
I believe that democracy will prevail. But if the last year has taught us anything, it’s that it won’t be easy.
Thank you for being a part of this fight.
In solidarity,
Barbara Lee
