Today, as we commemorate the anniversary of the deadly attack on the U.S Capitol on January 6th, we remember a dark day in our nation’s history. I was present on the House floor that day behind a bulletproof chair as violent insurrectionists stormed the Capitol in an attempt to disrupt democracy.

I appreciate that the House has taken action to establish a bipartisan commission investigating the events of January 6th. In six months, the commission interviewed more than 300 witnesses, obtained thousands of documents, and is preparing to reveal its findings to the public.

While we remember the attack on democracy, we also remember how democracy prevailed. We must find the goodwill and courage to stand up to the hate, lies, and extremism that leads to such attacks.
