John,
January 6th, 2021 will be known as one of the darkest days in American history, and one year later, we’re still processing just what exactly happened that day.
The Capitol riot was an attack on American democracy. As Congress gathered to affrim the results of a free and fair election, armed rioters emboldened by Trump’s lies about election fraud stormed the capitol, putting members of Congress, their staffers, as well as Capitol Police and many others lives in danger. And five people died as a result of the attack on the Capitol.
The day these insurgents stormed the Capitol made it abundantly clear just how precious and fragile American democracy is and what we need to do to ensure it is protected.
That’s why it was so crucial that legislation like the Protecting our Democracy Act was passed swiftly to embolden and strengthen our democratic institutions.
John, join me in standing strong to protect American democracy →
I want to thank both the Capitol Police and our armed forces for their brave actions that day. Because of their courage and sacrifices, members of Congress and their staff were protected from what could have been more deadly and dangerous.
We must protect our democracy from attacks like these, and we must be strong in our actions to confront threats from within our own communities. Together, we can ensure that American democracy lasts for generations to come.
Respectfully,
Carolyn Maloney
