Dear John,
The Constitution could not be clearer: “We, the People” are in charge. Not special interests. Not polluters. Not lobbyists. We are. And for climate voters like you, the right to vote is critical to making climate progress.
Every generation is challenged to support, expand and strengthen our democracy. Finding ways to work together is what being an American is supposed to mean.
But today we are confronting challenges to our democracy unlike any in recent memory. In the past year, 49 states have introduced more than 440 bills – and 19 states have passed 30 laws – that threaten to erode the fabric and core of our democracy and the freedom to vote.
The time to act is now and that’s why we’re urging you to call on Congress to pass the Freedom to Vote Act and the John Lewis Voting Rights Advancement Act – key pieces of legislation that will improve our democracy by protecting our right to vote.
Send a powerful message to your Senators and urge them to support the Freedom to Vote Act and the John Lewis Voting Rights Advancement Act!
When everyone’s vote counts and everyone’s voice is heard, we can hold our government accountable to addressing critical needs like combating the climate crisis, advancing environmental justice, and protecting our air, lands, waters, oceans, and wildlife. Democracy, climate action and environmental justice are inseparable. And these federal bills are vital to protect our democracy and the hard-won progress we’ve made to cut climate pollution and unleash clean energy innovation.
EDF Action is joining with hundreds of advocacy groups representing millions of Americans to call on Congress to pass the Freedom to Vote Act and the John Lewis Voting Rights Advancement Act. Together these bills will address some of the biggest problems facing our democracy: from efforts to restrict access to the ballot, to voter roll purges, to extreme partisan gerrymandering.
If passed, these bills will strengthen our democracy by transforming elections for the better, including efforts to:
- Expand early voting periods;
- Establish Election Day a legal public holiday;
- Increase the number of voting locations; and
- Modernize voter registration policies to make it easier to vote.
Join us in this fight to ensure that all eligible Americans have the freedom to express their views through the act of voting. It is the only way to ensure our elected officials listen to us and not the big polluters. Send your message today!
Thank you for raising your voice,
Sam Parry, Membership Director
