John —
I will never forget January 6, 2021.
For the first time since the War of 1812, a mob of armed insurrectionists breached our Capitol building. Many wore and carried symbols of white supremacy, and they brought these symbols of hate into the People's House as they desecrated the building.
Over 100 officers were injured in the attack. Five people lost their lives. And four officers who responded to the attack took their own lives in the days and weeks that followed.
Donald Trump fueled the flames of that terrible day. He lied again and again for his own political salvation, and the consequences were deadly. He rallied his base to try and overthrow our democracy and overturn the will of the American people.
Donald Trump's insurrection failed, John, when the will of the people persevered and President Joe Biden's victory was confirmed. But, attacks on our democracy didn't end on January 6.
Last year, at least 19 states passed 34 laws restricting access to voting. These anti-democratic, racist laws are a direct consequence of Trump's Big Lie that the 2020 election was "stolen."
I am more focused than ever on protecting our democracy from partisan attacks and defending the voting rights of people of color. That's why I joined House Democrats in proudly passing legislation that protects everyone's sacred right to vote and strengthens our democracy.
On today's anniversary, I am once again calling on the Senate to make an exception to the filibuster. This exception would enable Congress to pass laws that prevent the disenfranchisement of voters of color. Will you join me in demanding the Senate make an exception to the filibuster for any legislation related to civil rights? » [link removed]
January 6, 2021, reminded me of something I'll never forget: Our democracy is precious. It is vulnerable. I will fight for a more perfect union and to hold Trump — and anyone who tries to silence the American people — accountable.
In solidarity,
Dwight
