John,
One year ago today, an angry mob of election deniers attacked the U.S. Capitol, incited in large part by a president who refused to concede a free and fair election.
My heart goes out to those who were injured and lost their lives as a result of this horrific event, including our law enforcement officers.
It was a dark day for our country, but democracy prevailed. When it was finally safe to return hours later, Congress certified President Biden and Vice President Kamala Harris’ rightful victory.
But the perpetrators of this violence have yet to be held fully accountable, and on the heels of another important election, our right to vote is still in danger.
Our elections are yet another example of Republicans denying facts and data to pursue their agenda, with some of the worst offenders right here in Pennsylvania. For the past year, Pennsylvania Republicans have abused their power and wasted taxpayer money by launching a fraudulent audit.
And in states across the country and in the U.S. Senate, election deniers have worked to undermine confidence in our elections and make it harder to vote, putting one of the most essential constitutional rights at risk.
We must act to stop these repeated attacks on our democracy. As Pennsylvania’s next U.S. Senator, I will do everything I can to expand access to the ballot box and strengthen our democracy. That’s a promise.
I know this day brings back terrible memories for so many of us. But this day is also a call to action for each of us to protect and defend our democracy.
