One year ago today, my staff and I witnessed with shock and terror as a mob of Trump insurrectionists stormed the Capitol. They tried to stop us from certifying President Biden's fairly counted election victory, but their senseless and deadly attack, stoked by the fires of lies and fraud, went much further.
The attack on Congress shook the fundamental fabric of our democracy - free and fair elections. And in its aftermath, we have seen these lies of election fraud turn into the basis for laws that severely restrict voting rights across the country, from unwarranted voter ID laws to curbing early or absentee voting, to blatant faulty voter purges.
We, the members of Congress, have the power to protect our communities from these unconstitutional restrictions on voting that have already been enacted in 19 different states. In particular, I urge the Senate to follow in the steps of the House to pass the John Lewis Voting Rights Advancement Act, to prevent discriminatory voting rights laws that are an assault on our democracy.
Later tonight, vigils will be held across the nation. Let's take this time to reflect, to honor the bravery of so many who defended the Capitol, and remember we cannot take our democracy for granted. It is our collective responsibility to defend it.
Our work continues and I look forward to standing with you.
