A year ago today, we witnessed one of the greatest threats to our country we have ever seen in our lifetime – then president of the United States, Donald Trump, unleashed a violent mob on the U.S. Capitol building to stop the certification results of an election he had lost.
Congress then moved to impeach Donald Trump for one of the most violent attacks on our democracy in our nation’s history. As part of the impeachment managers team, I am proud to have made history as the first representative of a US territory to serve as an impeachment manager, and to have been the only Black woman in the Senate Chamber during that trial.
One year later, the January 6 committee is moving full steam ahead to continue to hold those responsible for the attack accountable. I am very proud of their ongoing efforts and fully support their investigation and their planned 2022 public hearings.
But as you know, Trump loyalists are doing everything they can to obstruct the investigation by refusing to cooperate. If Republicans take the House this fall, they will shut down the committee and put a lid on any work that is left undone. My colleagues and I proved the impeachment case beyond any reasonable doubt and delivered the most bipartisanship impeachment ever. And although we did not secure the vote of 43 Republican Senators, that only makes our drive stronger to hold the House majority in November 2022 — but that means we must be ready now.
Serving as an impeachment manager was one of the greatest responsibilities I ever had as a representative of the Virgin Islands sworn to protect our democracy.
But protecting our democracy will need all of us to come together and hold our House majority to ensure an attack like the one on January 6, 2021 never happens again. Will you join me in this fight? [[link removed]]
