** Apparently affordable energy matters to some people.

AP News ([link removed]) (1/5/22) reports: " A Russia-led military alliance said Thursday that it will dispatch peacekeeping forces to Kazakhstan after the country’s president asked for help in controlling protests that escalated into violence, including the seizure and setting afire of government buildings. Protesters in Kazakhstan’s largest city stormed the presidential residence and the mayor’s office Wednesday and set both on fire, according to news reports, as demonstrations sparked by a rise in fuel prices escalated sharply in the Central Asian nation. Police reportedly fired on some protesters at the residence in Almaty before fleeing. They have clashed repeatedly with demonstrators in recent days, deploying water cannons in the freezing weather, and firing tear gas and concussion grenades. The Kazakh Interior Ministry said eight police officers and national guard members were killed in the unrest and more than 300 were injured. No figures on civilian
casualties were released."

** "A brief reading of history shows that there will always be a crisis, conflict, or catastrophe around the corner that those in power will use as a pretext to violate the very liberties governments are supposed to protect—and if there’s not one, you can bet they’ll find one."

Nobody should buy anything from a company that sides with government regimes that enslave its own citizens. Period. Full stop.

(1/4/22) reports: "Erke, a leading domestic clothing maker, has started producing goods in Northwest China's Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region, as more companies, including US electric carmaker Tesla, increase their presence in the region, shrugging off a US crackdown. Erke announced on its official Sina Weibo account that its production base in Xinjiang went into operation on Monday. 'We will use premium cotton in Xinjiang to produce premium products. Let's sew together,' the brand announced. The manufacturing base boasts 120 production lines and will create 4,000 jobs, according to the company. Xinjiang, as China's largest production base of long-staple cotton, has been a supplier of high-quality cotton for the world and has always adhered to high standards when selecting raw materials, which is why the company has chosen to set up the production base in Xinjiang, Erke said."

We need high-speed rail everywhere.

(1/5/22) reports: "A Brightline higher-speed train fatally struck a pedestrian who walked into its path Tuesday, the fifth death involving the railroad since it recently resumed operations after being shutdown because of the pandemic. Boynton Beach police said the pedestrian was struck about 7:50 a.m. Spokesperson Stephanie Slater said no further details were immediately available. The recent deaths have all occurred in the last month, continuing a trend that shows Brightline to have the worst fatality rate among the country’s approximately 800 railroads since it began test runs in mid-2017, according to an Associated Press analysis of Federal Railroad Administration data."
