Friend,
One year ago today, millions of people across the world watched in horror as anti-democratic conspiracy theorists attempted to overthrow American democracy. Fueled by disinformation and a desire to silence the voices of voters of color, their deadly attack on the U.S. Capitol exposed an illness in our nation that for too long has gone overlooked.
While the forces behind the January 6, 2021 invasion of our nation’s Capitol did not emerge overnight, the vigor behind their violence was blatant backlash against the political power demonstrated by voters like you, who turned out in historic numbers to restore democratic ideals to our halls of government.
Sadly, the attempted insurrection was only the most recent example in a long pattern of violent voter suppression and election subversion seen throughout our history. These tactics were used together during the Jim Crow era of the 1890s-1960s to prevent Black voters from demonstrating their full electoral power in the South—and they continue today.
Over the past year we have seen a resurgence of these necrotic Jim Crow tactics, from threats against election workers to election sabotage efforts at the local level to the more than 580 anti-voter bills that were introduced in state legislatures in 2021 alone. The disease plaguing our nation is born from a desire by those in power to silence and invalidate voters they deem unworthy so they can continue ruling on behalf of the privileged few.
While the forces that work to undermine our democracy are behemoth, we must persevere. Only by working together—and reminding ourselves why we are in this fight—can we realize our shared vision of a multi-racial, multi-generational democracy where every eligible voter is able to cast their ballot, have their ballot counted, and make their voice heard.
We need you in this fight. And we need you to use your voice by demanding that your U.S. Senators pass the Freedom to Vote Act and the John Lewis Voting Rights Advancement Act —immediately.
Let me be clear : There is no alternative. No other bills currently being considered by Congress provide the necessary protections to safeguard eligible Americans’ freedom to vote and prevent election sabotage at the state level. Together, these two bills represent the first and most critical step toward healing our democracy. Together, we will forge a path forward.
