Friend,

One year ago today, our nation woke up to some extraordinary news:

Reverend Raphael Warnock and Jon Ossoff had prevailed in upsetting two incumbent Republican Senators in Georgia’s runoff election on January 5th. Both were about to join our Democratic caucus in the Senate.

It was the result of a multiyear, multi-election effort led by organizers of every background who came together, persevered through heartbreak and defeat, and ultimately prevailed in one of the most consequential runoff elections in U.S. history.

The feeling was elating. After an unprecedented election against the most divisive president of our lifetimes, and the uncertainty that followed November, with the prospects of a divided Congress hampering the President’s agenda from the very start, we had flipped the Senate.

Yet, we hardly had the chance to celebrate.

Georgia had just elected its first Black and Jewish United States Senators in history, but before we could even begin to reckon with the possibilities of our new majority, Donald Trump and his supporters launched an insurrection that shook our Capitol. They injured more than 150 Capitol and DC police officers, called for the death of Vice President Mike Pence, and stalked our Capitol’s hallways in an effort to prevent certification of the presidential election.

Even after these events, 147 of my Republican colleagues in Congress still voted to reject the legitimate outcome of the 2020 presidential election. Instead of reckoning with the devastating effects of the Big Lie, we have seen Trump, the GOP, and right-wing media double down on fanning the flames of hate and violence.

Here is the truth:

Our democracy is still in a perilous position, but one year later, I am determined that we must hold on to love, truth, and compassion for our neighbors if we are to overcome hate, lies, and anger.

Love is what showed me the way to becoming a public servant. It’s a replenishing force that we can draw from for strength during our moments of greatest adversity or doubt to keep moving forward, even when the odds are long and prospects for triumph are slim.

Love drives me to keep going when I feel my optimism dwindling. Love reminds me to keep pushing when obstacles of hate or injustice lay in our path. And love inspires me to keep putting my faith and trust in you, the American people, with each new day.

With you by my side and love guiding our work, I’m confident that we can protect our democracy. Root out injustice. And meaningfully improve the lives of our people.

2022 is an important year at a pivotal point in our history. Thank you for being here, for being a part of our work, and for fighting for love above all.

With love and gratitude,

— Cory
