It Starts With You

We live in an age where one can slap some words over a picture and proclaim
it as news. The more incendiary it is, the quicker it travels.

Facts matter. The truth matters. Facts aren’t partisan, they are simply
facts. Accepting the results of an election matters, even if you are
disappointed by the outcome. Having the resiliency to pick yourself up,
move on and rebuild when things don’t go your way is one of the hardest
things one can ever do.

Democracy is indeed a fragile and precious thing. It is not a given, it is
something that needs to be nurtured and preserved over time. It should
never be taken for granted. It’s easy to get caught up in your own life and
think that you don’t have time for all of this.

Perhaps now, we all can dedicate just a little time to seeing through the
barrage of television ads and take some time to learn about the people we
hire to represent us, at all levels of government. We need to ask the tough
questions of them and expect results on the promises that they make. We
need to have difficult conversations with people who may disagree with us
about what is important to us and why. And maybe we can find some common
ground.

You don’t need to run for President to save our democracy. It starts with
each of us. It starts with knowing the candidates in your area. It starts
with learning about history and civics. It starts with voting. It starts
with you.
