One year ago today, on January 6, 2021, armed insurrectionists breached our nation’s Capitol and tried to overturn the results of a free and fair democratic election all because of Donald Trump’s big lie.

Five people died, including a Capitol Police Officer who was simply trying to do his job by protecting members of Congress and our democracy.

These are photos from in and around my office on that day. I won’t forget the damage that these traitors did to our nation’s Capitol, and the threat they posed to our democracy.

I never would have imagined that one year later, instead of working to protect our Democracy, even more Republican members of Congress would join Trump in peddling the very same lies that led to the insurrection in the first place. Some have even claimed that the events of that day were just a “peaceful protest.”

Let’s be clear: this violent mob was attempting to overthrow the rightfully elected government and cause physical harm to members of Congress and workers in our Capitol simply because they didn’t like the results of an election — results that Republican election officials across the country had certified. These actions were a direct rejection of our country’s democratic ideals.

This year, the committee investigating the occurrences of January 6th will begin public hearings so that every citizen can get a transparent look into what happened that day. It’s my hope that receiving more information on the insurrection will allow us to ensure that nothing like this ever happens again.
