A year ago, I watched my Republican congressman, Madison Cawthorn, betray our democracy by helping to incite a violent mob on the morning of January 6th – after previously trafficking in conspiracy theories and encouraging supporters to threaten elected officials. He made it clear he isn’t fit to serve in Congress.

Now, Cawthorn is attempting to orchestrate an extremist, far-right takeover of North Carolina, and Western NC is ground zero of this effort. We have a responsibility to replace his divisive, toxic brand of politics, because it neither represents who we are in Western North Carolina, nor meets the urgent needs of our district.

I know there’s another path forward for us. It’s a path that will be built by organizing in every corner of our district, that will bring people together around a common purpose, and that will lead us to victory in November.

A year from now, I plan on representing Western North Carolina in Congress by focusing on love, empathy, and doing what’s right. That’s why we are building a campaign that is rooted in organizing. That means meeting people where they are, talking about the issues that mean the most to them, and doing a whole lot of listening.

People want real results that improve their lives, not to be used as a launch pad for the political careers and ambitions of people like Madison Cawthorn, or Mark Meadows before him.

As an organizer and elected official, I have the experience of addressing pressing issues, winning against the odds, organizing everywhere and delivering for working families. That’s how we’ll win this district, but it will take all of us to do it.
