John --
One year ago, a violent mob of insurrectionists stormed the U.S. Capitol in an attempt to stop the certification of the results of the 2020 election. The insurrectionists temporarily delayed Congress' constitutional duty to count the Electoral College votes, hundreds were injured and five Americans lost their lives.
However, that was hardly the end of the story. Though the violence we saw was truly terrifying, the insurrection on January 6 wasn't the only attack on our democracy that we witnessed last year.
In 2021 alone, more than 500 voter suppression bills were introduced in all 50 states and 33 have signed into law, making it more difficult for Americans to vote and threatening our democracy. These bills make it harder to register to vote and to cast a ballot, particularly for Black and Brown voters, young voters, voters with disabilities and working class Americans.
So what can we do now?
Earlier this week, Senate Majority Leader Schumer announced that the Senate will move forward on voting rights legislation and if Republicans continue to block the passage of this critical legislation designed to protect voting rights, that he will seek to change Senate rules by January 17. That means filibuster reform.
The most important thing you can do RIGHT NOW to help us in this fight for voting rights is contacting your senators and talk to them about the importance of passing voting rights legislation and instituting meaningful filibuster reform. We must never forget how we felt on January 6, 2021, when insurrectionists sought to overturn the will of the American people. We must stay focused, work together, and do everything we can to protect our democracy by putting the power back where it belongs -- in the hands of the people.
Thank you for being in this fight with us. We cannot do this without you.
In solidarity,
Stephanie
