John,
One year ago today, rioters stormed the U.S. Capitol in a violent attempt to overturn the 2020 election results.
That day was a clear reminder of the grip that white supremacy and radical right wing politics have on our country — of the dire threat facing our democracy.
And still, one year later, the true perpetrators and planners of the insurrection remain in positions of power. We live in a country where the rich and powerful can actively undermine our democracy, promote white supremacy, and encourage right wing domestic terrorism without any damage to their status, reputation, or influence.
And as a Black woman and political activist, there’s nothing more infuriating than seeing systems of white supremacy, racial injustice, and blatant double standards of our criminal justice system play out in real time, on the largest possible scale. The Capitol Riot was just the beginning. If we don’t hold the insurrectionists accountable, shore up our democracy against right-wing attacks, and put in the work to dismantle systems of white supremacy in our country, things will only get worse.
We need justice, John, and it’s clear that members of the establishment aren’t willing to make that happen. So now, it’s up to us.
Thank you for being a part of our movement.
— Imani
