Chuck Schumer

Friend --

One year ago today, supporters of former President Trump stormed the U.S. Capitol in an attempt to overturn the results of the free and fair 2020 election. Incited by the "big lie" and disinformation, the insurrectionists tried to overthrow our democracy. Five people were killed and countless others injured. It was one of the darkest days in American history.

In the months following, it was revealed that members of Congress -- my colleagues -- were involved in planning the insurrection. Text messages have come out that show Republicans pleading with Trump's staff to have him call off the rioters.

As I reflect on the horrific events of Janu‌ary 6, I am so deeply grateful for the members of law enforcement who bravely responded to the attack and that our democratic institutions prevailed. But I'm reminded of the stark truth that Republicans have tried to downplay and cover up what happened a year ago, and weaken our democracy even further.

It's become clear that the insurrection wasn't an isolated event. It's just one part of Republicans' coordinated attacks on our democracy. From making it harder to vote to giving administrative control of our elections to partisan actors, Republicans across the country are systematically trying to weaken our democracy in the name of Trump's Big Lie.

We will not allow history to be erased. And we will not allow Republicans to destroy our democracy. Democrats will continue to fight to protect the right to vote, no matter what.

Thank you for standing with us.

Sincerely,

Chuck Schumer
