Friend,

One year ago today, to try to overturn the results of our presidential election, insurrectionists attacked our nation’s Capitol with our federal representatives trapped inside. While the invasion failed in its ultimate goal, it resulted in death and injury to law enforcement officers and damage to the most important symbol of our democracy. It also violated a most sacred democratic principle – the peaceful transfer of power as a result of a free and fair election.

Our country rests on certain ideals – that all people are created equal; that all are endowed by their Creator with certain inalienable rights, including life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness; and that all Americans have an equal vote in choosing our government to secure these rights.

These are the patriotic values that unite us as Americans.

Each election, we passionately fight for the causes and candidates we believe in. We lend our voices and our votes in pursuit of a nation that fulfills our highest aspirations. And when every vote is counted, we celebrate our victories and accept our losses. That’s how democracy in the United States is supposed to work.

But too many politicians undermine these principles and sow division to cling to power. They promote the Big Lie about the 2020 election. They gerrymander districts to discriminate against certain voters based on their race or political views so they can lock in their power no matter the will of the voters. And they tolerate insurrectionists, putting their craven ambition ahead of the common good.

It’s wrong, and we can change it.

2022 brings another election. We must redouble our efforts to protect the most fundamental right in our democracy – our right to vote. History repeatedly demonstrates that when we stick together as Americans and defend our core values, we strengthen and revitalize our nation. I pledge to do my part as your Attorney General, and I am proud to stand with you as we strive to uphold our American ideals.

In love of country,

Josh
