Dear Friends,
One year ago today, I gathered with my House and Senate colleagues inside the Capitol to certify the results of the 2020 election.
The events that followed are seared in all of our memories: A deadly insurrection—clearly incited by then-president Donald Trump—that threatened to undermine the peaceful transition of power and the very foundation of our democracy.
I shared my reflections in a piece for The New York Times last year. If you have a few moments, I hope you will read it.
It’s not yet clear what the January 6 insurrection will mean in the context of our history. That depends on us—and what we do next.
We still have the chance to fight back: to protect voting rights and fight the voter suppression laws sweeping the country (even if that means getting rid of the filibuster); to hold the insurrectionists accountable; to get the truth out—about what happened and who was responsible.
Failure is not an option—not when our democracy is at stake.
Thank you for staying in the fight.
With love and strength,
Kirsten
