Defend democracy and voting rights in a single action today.

ACLU Supporter –

One year ago today, pro-Trump loyalists stormed the Capitol in an attempt to prevent Congress from certifying the results of the 2020 presidential election – a violent refusal by a vocal minority to accept the peaceful transfer of power to a legitimately-elected president.

It's easy to think of the insurrection as a single, outlandish siege on our democracy. But sustained efforts have been unfolding against our right to vote and to free and fair elections – cornerstones of democracy – long before that day.

January 6 was a markedly perverse turning point in those efforts. And before I go further, I want you to know you can help ACLU defend voting rights in this fight by urging your senators to pass the John Lewis Voting Rights Advancement Act (VRAA). <[link removed]>

Defend Democracy and Voting Rights Now <[link removed]>

Here's why this specific action is important today: In 2021 alone, over 400 anti-voter measures were introduced by states and local jurisdictions across the country. Many of these bills blatantly targeted voters of color, from mass purges of voter rolls to racially gerrymandered electoral maps that systematically disenfranchise Black voters.

These measures were pushed forward in many instances by politicians using baseless and unfounded claims of widespread voter fraud around the election – but in reality, the aim is to limit who is part of the democratic process, how they get to participate, and when their participation counts.

The ACLU, our affiliates, and our partners have been fighting back – litigating against gerrymandered maps in 5 states and counting in this redistricting cycle, challenging discriminatory and illegal voter suppression attempts, and well beyond.

While we carry this fight forward across the country, Congress can and must do its part, too. The VRAA is a crucial component to that – and we already know the Senate is paying special attention to this voting rights legislation today given the anniversary.

The VRAA will begin to root out voting barriers that discriminate against voters of color and help strengthen and restore key provisions of the Voting Rights Act that were gutted by Supreme Court decisions handed down in 2013 and as recently as last year.

ACLU Supporter, January 6 flagrantly illustrated that our democracy can't be taken for granted – it must be protected and fortified. And that cannot happen without fair and equal voting in this country.

So please, send a message to your senator, tell them to pass the VRAA now, and thank you for doing your part for democracy on this day – and always. <[link removed]>
