Friend,
One year ago today, armed insurrectionists stormed the United States Capitol in an attempt to prevent the certification of a free and fair election. Like many Americans, I watched in horror as a violent mob swarmed into our democratic institutions and forced democratically elected leaders to hide in fear. Since then, I have been proud to see Americans from many walks of life stand up for our democracy and denounce both the violence and the rhetoric that led to it. But I have also been horrified by the cowardice displayed by New Mexico Republicans.
In the last year, Republicans have downplayed the riots, denied President Trump’s role in inciting the violence, and even blamed “both sides” for the attack. Hours after the Capitol was attacked, Representative Yvette Herrell joined extremists like Marjorie Taylor Greene to vote against certifying the 2020 election results. And to this day, she continues to accept the endorsement of Cowboys for Trump founder Couy Griffin, who was arrested for his role in the violence. The GOP’s cowardly response to this tragic moment in American history has been shameful and unconscionable. Republicans in our state have shown that they are unfit to lead.
That’s why it’s more important than ever that we don’t allow them to take control of New Mexico’s government. Donate now to help us elect leaders in 2022 who will stand up for our democratic institutions and do what’s right for our nation. Thank you for your support, and for your ongoing work to protect our democracy.
