Today’s anniversary is a solemn one for all of us who cherish democracy. One year ago, America and the world watched as a violent mob, whipped up by a desperate and defeated man, attacked the U.S. Capitol. The very heart of our democracy was defiled in an attempt to overturn a free and fair election. That was the plan: to subvert the Constitution and steal the election.

For 187 minutes, then-President Trump watched with glee as his supporters besieged the Capitol and those guarding it. He refused to call his supporters off and blocked the National Guard from responding. Donald Trump’s closest advisors - from his children, to Fox News hosts, to lawyers - begged then-Chief of Staff Mark Meadows to persuade the former president to call off the attack. Instead he reveled in images of members of Congress running for their lives, the vice president being whisked away by the Secret Service, and members of law enforcement being beaten and even killed. It wasn’t simply a dereliction of duty. It was his desire.

Of course, the insurrection wasn’t limited to the men and women who stormed the capitol. There were 147 elected Republicans who voted to overturn the election. Many of those Republicans continue to propagate the Big Lie today. The movement to overthrow democracy continues to this day.

The Renew America Movement knows that the events of January 6 should never be forgotten or excused. If our elected officials do not honor the will of the people, then our democracy is doomed to fail. We are united in this fight to protect and strengthen our democracy, and ensure that we never again face such a dire threat to American liberty.

Safeguarding American democracy will take all of us, working across old divisions to replace the dividers in our government with renewers who will stand by the Constitution and our principles. January 6th should be a permanent reminder that our democracy is not simply guaranteed. It demands a vigilant citizenry devoted to its preservation.

That is the coalition we are building here at RAM. Together we must keep the memory of January 6th alive, not as a monument to would-be authoritarians, but as an occasion to recommit ourselves to the hard work of strengthening our democracy. The extremists could not win that day. We will ensure they never do.
