As we usher in a new year, let’s remember that 2022 is an election year. New federal, state and local districts have been drawn across the State. Many ballot measures have qualified, and there are plenty more on the way. So, the stakes are incredibly high—not just here in California, but across the nation.

As California Democrats, we must lead the rest of the country to victory in 2022. We do it by engaging 10 million Democrats to connect with voters by any means necessary. If we do the hard work it takes to win, I know that our Democracy will be better because of us. Let’s get to work!

Democratically yours,
Rusty Hicks
CADEM Chair

Thursday, Jan. 6, 4 p.m.–6 p.m.
Fresno City Hall

Jan. 6, 2021, saw a violent and deadly attack against all Americans—against our country, our democracy and our freedom as voters to choose the leaders that represent us so that we have a government of, by and for the people.

One year later, the same faction that attacked our country on Jan. 6 is hard at work silencing our voices by restricting our freedom to vote, attacking fair voting districts and quietly preparing future attempts to sabotage free and fair elections and with it our democracy.

So this Jan. 6, exactly one year later, Americans across race, place, party and background are holding candlelight vigils to say: In America, the voters decide the outcome of elections.

The promise of democracy is not a partisan issue but rather a calling that unites us as Americans. To prevent this kind of attack from happening again, our elected leaders must pass urgent legislation that will protect the country from anti-democratic forces who are continuing their efforts to destroy it.

Coming together, we can prevent another Jan. 6 attack and realize the promise of democracy for all of us—no matter our color, zip code or income—so we all have an equal say in the decisions that shape our daily lives and futures.

The state is mandating ([link removed]) [link removed] masks be worn in all indoor public settings—regardless of Covid-19 vaccination status—for the next four weeks through Jan. 15.

Health and Human Services Secretary Dr. Mark Ghaly said, “Frankly, hospital capacity is still pressed and challenged. We see that in parts of Southern California, Riverside, San Bernardino, Mono, Inyo County, we see it around the Central Valley and San Joaquin Valley, and in the northernmost parts of our state.”

“Even a 10% increase in indoor masking can reduce case transmission significantly,” Ghaly said.

State Senator Anna Caballero (D–Salinas) announced that she will run for reelection in the Central Valley Senate District 14, and issued the following statement:

“I have represented Merced, Madera and Fresno counties since my election to the California State Senate in 2018. In 2022, I will ask the voters to allow me the honor of continuing to represent them in the California State Senate.”

Caballero was first elected to the California State Senate in 2018, after previously serving six years in the California Assembly. She was the highest-ranking Latina in Governor Jerry Brown’s cabinet from 2011 to 2015, serving as Secretary of the California Business Consumer Services and Housing Agency.

As part of her reelection campaign announcement, she outlined what she has achieved and the directions she hopes to carry our state in the future.

“I have worked in close partnership with community and neighborhood leaders and elected officials from Merced, Madera and Fresno counties, and I look forward to continuing to support their efforts to improve the lives of their families and communities.

“Together, we have tackled issues that rural and agricultural communities face, such as high-speed Internet access, quality affordable healthcare, support for small businesses, fighting for adequate school funding, access to safe drinking water and funding for UC Merced/Fresno State Medical Schools.

“We showed resilience and real cooperation in responding to the Covid-19 pandemic and now we are working to keep schools, businesses and communities safely open and thriving. We learned a lot about how strong our communities are, but we also learned about the many needs of our community that need to be addressed. I look forward to helping us come back even stronger.”

State Senator Melissa Hurtado (D–Sanger) launched her campaign for reelection in the newly redrawn Senate District 14 and issued the following statement:

“When I first ran for and was elected to the State Senate in 2018, I made a commitment to never stop fighting for our Valley and to bring reliable and clean water supplies to our families and farmers, ensure food security, improve access to education and ensure everyone can get affordable quality health care.

“For too long, Valley families hadn’t had the kind of leadership they deserved in the Senate and flipping this seat, and getting to work for our families and communities, continues to be one of the proudest moments of my life.

“We’ve been in some tough battles and had tremendous success over the last four years, but there is still more work to be done. That’s why I am excited to formally announce my campaign for reelection to the State Senate.

“I am looking forward to continuing the work we’ve been doing, building on our achievements and doing even more so that every Valley family lives in safe, healthy and thriving communities.”

Senator Hurtado was first elected to the State Senate in 2018. Prior to her election, she served as a member of the Sanger City Council. She is running to represent the newly redrawn Senate District 14, which includes portions of Fresno, Madera and Merced Counties, and the cities of Atwater, Chowchilla, Coalinga, Dos Palos, Firebaugh, Fowler, Gustine, Huron, Kerman, Los Banos, Madera, Mendota, Merced, Orange Cove, Parlier, Reedley, Sanger, San Joaquin, and Selma, and portions of the Cities of Fresno and Livingston.

Rep. Jim Costa (D–Fresno) announced he is running for reelection to the U.S. Congress and issued the following statement:

“I’ve spent my career working to ensure everyone has the chance to be a part of a strong middle-class and has what they need to raise their families in safe, healthy communities. Navigating the global pandemic and expanding access to quality healthcare, especially in our rural and underserved communities, delivering cleaner air and protecting critically needed access to water for our families and farmers requires steady, battle-tested leadership.”

“That’s why I am proud to announce that I will be running for reelection to Congress, to continue being that leader. In Congress, I will continue my commitment to ensuring our families, children and small business owners can thrive in a post-quarantine world and come back even stronger. I am looking forward to the road ahead and continuing to serve our Valley and all Californians. I look forward to campaigning vigorously and earning the vote of those who call our Valley home.”
