Hello and happy New Year!
|
Hi everyone and happy New Year! My name is Lori and I'm DSA-LA's new Communications Director.
2022 is going to be an exciting and challenging year for building socialism in Los Angeles, and there are a lot of different ways to get involved: standing with striking workers, canvassing for candidates, learning at a discussion group, sharing artistic skills, and much more. Each week, this newsletter will highlight events and announcements for the chapter. Feel free to reply directly if you have any questions or suggestions.
In solidarity,
- Lori D.

This Saturday, attend DSA-LA's Candidate Endorsement Forum!
|
Saturday, January 8 @ 1:00 pm - 4:30 pm
|
DSA-LA is now considering three additional candidates for the chapter’s endorsement in the 2022 general election: Los Angeles City Council Candidates Bryant Odega (CD 15) and Eunisses Hernandez (CD1) and State Assembly Candidate Fatima Iqbal-Zubair (AD 64).
On Saturday, January 8, attend our Candidate Forum featuring a Q&A with the candidates! Following the Q&A, we will take a short break before transitioning to a closed deliberation session of the DSA-LA Membership. In the closed session, the Electoral Committee will present summary briefings on the races and districts, make a recommendation on endorsement, and DSA-LA members in good standing will debate reasons for or against supporting these candidates. All members will receive a ballot for consideration of all three candidate endorsements following the forum.

A statement from DSA-LA's Electoral Committee: The 2022 Election Cycle and Beyond
|
"Electoral campaigns are not an end in themselves; as mentioned in the 2021-22 DSA National Electoral Strategy, DSA does not participate in elections solely to support left candidates or win office, but in the name of building lasting socialist power, which is expressed between elections. Our endorsements build that kind of power when they are selectively given to candidates and followed by our organization campaigning strongly to support the campaign. DSA Los Angeles must be strategic and sparing in our 2022 endorsements, and that means we will need to turn down the endorsement of candidates who may be running on strong left policy platforms."

DSA-LA Organizing Institute team is looking for design help!
|
This chapter priority project is expected to run from now until June or July. The Institute, which is being developed now, will be a several-week program that offers leadership and organizing training to DSA members. The team is looking for 2+ people with design skills to help support the project by contributing ~2 hours per week depending on needs.
Tasks will include creating a basic style guide for the Institute, creating graphics advertising admission and project progress, and creating slide templates that can be applied to learning modules.
This is a great project for designers looking to support the development of DSA into a stronger socialist organization, while working with a small team to accomplish a clearly-scoped project through the first half of 2022.
Interested? Reply to this email and let us know!

CalCare (AB1400) will be reintroduced in the CA Assembly in January!
Join us as we table to educate on CalCare (AB1400) in Assemblymember Anthony Portantino‘s district.
Help gather supporters for a Medicare for All style program in California. 2-hour shifts.
Like Medicare for All, CalCare is built on 7 core principles:
- Universal coverage to all Californians as a human right
- A single, public program that would pay for all necessary and appropriate care for California residents
- Comprehensive benefits, including medical, dental, vision, reproductive care, long term care, and more
- Freedom to choose the doctors and hospital of your choice, with no narrow networks restricting what provider you can see
- Care that is free at the point of service, with no copays, deductibles, or prior authorizations
- A just transition for the workers who may be displaced or otherwise affected by the switch to CalCare; and
- Patient care based on patient need, with no financial incentives to delay or deny care, provided based on the professional judgment of your care provider, not corporate boardrooms
Join us as we table to educate on AB1400 Single Payer Healthcare for California. Help gather supporters for healthcare for all.

DSA-LA 2022 Member Survey – Planning Town Hall
|
Monday, January 10 @ 6:00 pm - 7:00 pm
|
If we want to achieve victory in our ongoing struggle against exploitation, oppression, injustice, and capitalism, it is crucial for us to know our own capacity at any given moment.
That’s why, by the end of January, we plan to survey our membership to learn about their demographics, availability, skills and interests!
We are hosting a town hall about this survey project on January 10th for two reasons:
- So members can learn about our survey plans and how they can help
- So members can provide crucial input about the plan and the survey itself
Please join us if you’re interested! However, if you can’t make it, you can still share feedback using this form!
You should also review the current member survey, developed in 2021. This is the template that we may adapt based on feedback.
Looking forward to seeing anyone that can make it!
This event is presented by the DSA-LA Admin Committee
