Friend,
On January 5, 2021, Georgians turned out in exciting, unprecedented numbers to flip the U.S. Senate and change the course of American history.
The joy and celebration of that day have remained with me throughout the year. The volunteers giving out food and water to voters waiting in line. The honking and waving of get-out-the-vote motorcades. The palpable excitement of building a new, inclusive, forward-looking Georgia.
We smashed turnout records for a runoff election. We broke barriers by electing the first Black Senator from the state of Georgia. And because of what we did, President Biden was able to send relief checks to every American, reduce child poverty, make game-changing investments in our infrastructure, and much more.
Make no mistake: The stop-and-start processes of voting rights, climate, and immigration legislation in the U.S. Senate have been frustrating. But that process wouldn’t even exist if Georgians hadn’t stepped up one year ago.
Republicans are PETRIFIED of what happened on January 5. That’s why they spent the last year doing everything in their power to make it harder for us to vote!
It’s no accident that their new voter suppression law targets the voting methods used most by Black, AAPI, Latinx, Indigenous, and young Georgians – the very voters who powered us to multiple historic victories.
There will be a lot of reflection on the Capitol attack on January 6, and rightly so. But let’s not forget the joy and excitement of January 5 – and recognize that there’s no limit to what we can do when the people of Georgia come together for a common purpose.
Thank you so much,
– Sarah
