John,
One year after the January 6 attack on the U.S. Capitol, we still desperately need to address what fomented that day’s violence: Second Amendment extremism.
The NRA and the gun lobby have spent decades emboldening vigilantes to take violent action against our lawmakers and our democratic institutions. The January 6 attack was fueled by this gun extremism, mitigated by America’s lax gun laws and an ever-growing white supremacist movement.
One year after the 1/6 attack, a new poll found that 1 in 3 Americans think violence against the government can be justified. It’s clear that rampant Second Amendment extremism continues to threaten our safety. And we must demand our leaders take action. Some polls suggest a majority of Republican voters still falsely believe the 2020 election was stolen. And threats of white supremacist-backed attacks still loom over state capitols across the country.
We cannot afford to stay silent, John. We cannot continue to let violent Second Amendment extremism go unchecked. That’s why we wrote a comprehensive new report explaining the role of Second Amendment extremism in fomenting the January 6 attack. We are demanding elected officials everywhere address these threats, complete with policy recommendations for Congress. We need them to act immediately.
Now, more than ever, we must stand firmly against their armed violence and hate. It’s up to us to demand action before it’s too late. Please, John, read our new report and join us in taking action so that we can prevent another 1/6.
