Welcome to 2022. Buckle up because things are finally going to start moving—and quickly.

So what’s happened so far? On Monday, Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer sent a letter to his colleagues underlining how critical it is that the Senate pass legislation to protect our freedom to vote, and outlining the path forward to get it done.

In the days to come, Schumer will bring the Freedom To Vote Act to a vote in the Senate one more time. When Mitch McConnell and other Republicans once again abuse the filibuster to block the bill (because of course they will), Senate Democrats will begin debating ways to reform the filibuster and ensure that voting rights pass—culminating in a vote on filibuster reform by January 17th, Martin Luther King Jr. Day.

It’s no surprise that they’re feeling the pressure to finally get this done. Right before Christmas, President Biden at last endorsed filibuster reform to pass voting rights, saying in an interview, "If the only thing standing between getting voting rights legislation passed and not getting passed is the filibuster, I support making the exception of voting rights for the filibuster."

This moment is huge—and in no small part thanks to you.

Together, the Stand Up community made over 90,000 constituent calls and sent 100,000 emails to the Senate, demanding an end to the filibuster so we can finally pass the Freedom to Vote Act and the John Lewis Voting Rights Advancement Act. We delivered over 400,000 petition signatures to the White House, calling on Biden to publicly tell the Senate to reform the filibuster. And we doubled down on our commitment to protecting our democracy when our Founder and our Executive Director were arrested in front of the White House in two civil disobedience actions calling on Biden to act.

Tomorrow is the one year anniversary of the deadly insurrection at the Capitol—a direct and violent attempt to overturn a free and fair election. Since January 6th, 2021, our voting rights have been attacked by Republican state legislatures and governors across the country.

The insurrection and the rampant voter suppression that followed should’ve been a wake-up call for the Senate to do everything possible to protect our elections. But one year later, the Senate has yet to pass a single bill to protect our democracy or our freedom to vote.

With Biden’s public support and Schumer’s commitment to bring rule changes to a vote, the only thing standing in the way are the few Senate Democrats who have yet to endorse ending the filibuster (we’re looking directly at you, Manchin and Sinema). It’s up to us to use the next two weeks to remind them and their colleagues what’s at stake.

Keeping the filibuster in place means allowing partisan gerrymandering to get even worse, voter suppression to run rampant, and leaving our elections open to partisan interference. Overturning the filibuster isn’t just the right thing to do; it’s vital to the survival of our democracy.

Watch this space. We’ll be back in your inbox this week, asking you to take action to reform the filibuster and pass voting rights once and for all.

Thank you for all that you do.
