Dear John

An Even More Hostile Environment

Today marks the second reading of the Nationality and Borders Bill in the House of Lords. This new law from Priti Patel criminalises compassion, penalising those who assist asylum seekers and punishes vulnerable refugees. We’re not going to let this bill pass without a fight.

One of the most striking clauses in the bill is a proposal to allow the Home Secretary to strip individuals of their citizenship without notifying them.

If individuals are unaware that they have lost their citizenship, they will be unable to appeal such a decision, and risk being left stateless.

Leaving an individual stateless is rightly banned by international law. But the Nationality and Borders bill only requires the Home Secretary to believe that an individual is eligible for citizenship of another country; they do not have to hold that citizenship already. We only have to look back to the Windrush Scandal to see the potential for this bill to unfairly alienate rightful British citizens.

But there is hope

From briefings for parliamentarians to explanatory twitter threads, Best for Britain is making sure as many people as possible are aware of the bill and the routes we can take to tackle it. The more people who know, the harder it is for Priti Patel to hide.

Will you help us? By sharing our campaign page with a friend or on social media, you can help to spread the word about the bill and the actions we can all take to challenge it.
