Today, Governor Hochul will outline her vision for New York in her State of the State address, detailing the year ahead. In this critical moment, with COVID-19 cases breaking all records set in NYS and across the country, and Congress in gridlock over President Biden’s domestic agenda, we’ll be watching to see how she steps up for our immigrant communities. 

Just a few weeks ago, we published an op-ed in the New York Daily News calling on Governor Hochul to take decisive action for immigrant New Yorkers. Immigrants have been taken for granted for far too long by those in power. As we enter the third year of this pandemic, it’s past time for Governor Hochul to deliver meaningful protections for immigrant New Yorkers.

As D.C. fails on immigration, Gov. Hochul must rise
 
New York failed the immigrant community during the pandemic and its immediate aftermath. The state provided our undocumented neighbors with the bare necessities — access to COVID-19 testing and treatment — but no meaningful follow-up care. Impacted community members lacked access to the state’s Essential Health Care Plan under the Cuomo administration, leaving immigrants more susceptible to the virus and the economic hardship that the lack of medical treatment has on individuals and families.
 
Hochul can change that and recognize that health care is a human right for all New Yorkers, regardless of documentation or status. She can break our pattern of unequal access to health and wellbeing for immigrant communities by expanding language access resources and ensuring everyone can access state-run health insurance plans.
Governor Hochul must step up and commit to real progress for immigrant New Yorkers. But no matter what she addresses today, we’re already gearing up to fight for our immigrant communities. Next week, we’re convening a virtual Member Congress to kickstart our campaigns for equitable healthcare, policing justice, and more. We’re organized and ready to expand immigrant rights across our state—it’s time for our leaders to hear our calls for justice and build a better New York State.
