Nearly a year ago today, I joined millions of other people in horror as we watched an insurrection and an attempted coup — an attack on democracy itself — to overturn a legitimate election.
I'm a veteran. When I joined the Navy, I swore to protect against all enemies, foreign and domestic. I never imagined domestic would include a Trump-directed mob to try and take down our government.
That day, I wondered what my own representative — Congressman Kevin McCarthy — would do in response to such a direct assault on our country. Would he stand up to Donald Trump, finally put aside politics aside, and put out a call for unity and accountability?
He did none of those things. Instead, the same day of that attack, Kevin McCarthy had a phone call with Donald Trump. And ever since then, he’s done everything he can to minimize just how close we came to losing our democracy.
So I did a little more digging on what — if anything — Kevin McCarthy has done for folks in our district.
I learned he has yet to make good on his promise to build a new VA clinic. He has not addressed our poisoned drinking water in Bakersfield. He has repeatedly blocked raising the wage when our district has some of the worst rates of poverty in the country. He has turned his backs on the people he represents.
That’s when I knew I wanted to serve my country one last time — by running for Congress against him.
Instead of cooperating with a full investigation into January 6th, he has tried to stop and obstruct the investigation at every turn.
He attempted to hold up the formation of the committee for months.
He threatened to strip any Republican House member of their committee assignments if they accepted an offer to participate on the Select Committee.
He did not appoint a single Republican to the committee and then called it ‘partisan based’ just hours before the opening of the committee’s first hearing in July.
Instead, Kevin McCarthy said he wanted to form his own committee to investigate the insurrection instigated by the leader of his own party.
Now, after doing everything he could do stop from bringing full accountability to those who allowed January 6th to unfold — including protecting members of his own party who have been directly connected to helping PLAN the insurrection — he’s continued to try and twist the story to blame the Democrats.
I am working to unseat him because he does not work for us, the folks of the Central Valley, who need real leadership in Washington. He continues to work for the very people that attempted to overthrow the government on January 6th.
This fight is going to take all of us.
This can be the year we defeat him. I’ve never been more convinced that guys like McCarthy should not be anywhere near the halls of power. Our district and our country deserve better. Chip in a few bucks and help finally hold McCarthy accountable by kicking him out of office.
