John,
Last year required a lot of perseverance and stamina, but I witnessed a community steadfast in their dedication to saving lives. I saw our supporters – like you – step up when we needed it most, especially after far too much tragedy we've witnessed after decades of inaction. This momentum is powerful, and I know we have the potential to really and tangibly reduce gun violence this year.
In 2021, Brady launched a national campaign in support of President Biden's anti-gun violence efforts — our staffers even met with the president's team as they considered gun violence prevention efforts. Partly as a result of our advocacy, Biden included $5 billion for evidence-based community violence intervention programs in the American Jobs Plan — arguably the largest investment in gun violence prevention in U.S. history.
Right now, anyone who wants to can obtain a firearm, without a background check, if they buy a kit to build a “ghost gun”. Thankfully, Brady made real, lifesaving headway in tackling the deadly proliferation of these DIY weapons across the nation. Not only has the Biden Administration introduced rules on ghost gun regulation, Brady fought hard and garnered victories with Nevada’s ghost guns ban, bans in cities across California, and now, legislation banning ghost guns is being introduced in state senates across the country.
And our legal team, helmed by Jon Lowy, litigated 25 cases and filed 6 new cases taking on large corporations this year alone. We are continuing to hold individual gun dealers accountable for the negligent practices that fuel gun violence in their communities and using our legal prowess to help victims and attack this epidemic from all sides – including fighting the NRA in the Supreme Court.
